Sound Design

Fascinated by sounds, their origin and possibilites I shape musical identities and create sound universes for moving media, theater and others.
I thoroughly enjoy working with people and support their vision, especially when they are not professionally working in music in any way - so it breaks down to an individual perception, which makes every project unique and pushes me to create beyond the beaten paths.

Some selected projects follow below. In my work, I always focus on where the sound will actually happen. So here you be able to hear the actual outcome, jingles & short cues. If you want hear the original sounds, other examples of longer use or how a specific sound library I created sounds, just let me know!

Historisches Museum Basel - Exhibition "verrückt normal"

I was mandated to create a sonic world accompanying an exhibit about the history of mental health institutions.
Whilst it should trigger some curiosity, it still should show depth and work against any dramatisation of the subject. Through a lot experimenting I ended up using a calm blend of various mallet instruments (e.g. Vibraphone, Xylophone, Bells) working in contrast to synthesised sounds of stringed instruments. Very sparse some distortion was used to subconsciously remind the listener of our disruptive perception of anything mental health related.
One of the assets I created can be heard here:

Countdown 2030 - Podcast

An association of renowned architects are pushing to meet the climate goals in their industry until 2030. I was asked to create the sonic identity of their podcast. Capturing the interest of the listener in a positive way whilst clearly showing "we are under pressure" was the premise for the sound So we experimented with some classic countdowns, aesthetics of popular music to keep it somewhat casual, adding a bit of a newsflash-vibe, twisting the sound of a clock ticking and voilà: We maybe under pressure, but this sound like we certainly like to listen to some people talk about it for another hour.
Here's the final product in use:

terre des hommes schweiz - Podcast

As part of this NGOs Youth Program, a podcast was created by its participants, to which I wrote a simple jingle for. From start to finish the young people participating where involved in the process of collecting ideas, genres and musical directions. The result: A playful but familiar sound aesthetic.

Historic Museum Basel - Social Media Campaign

To promote their latest exhibition about old treasures found in the region, the communication team of the museum conducted interviews, visited old sites of findings and compilated stories. I was commissioned to create some music to lie underneath but connect overall. So, by grabbing some sounds found in their visual campaign and adding some contradictions between ambient clouds and sharp sound effects we were able to achieve a great outcome.
Here's one example of some sounds I created in use:

Bühne Aarau / Böse Wetter - Theatre production

For a cooperation of a state theater with a upcoming creative collective I was asked to create the complete sound design. From field recordings in active mines, capturing the sound of 7 tons of stone being blown up, to soldering my own pickups and creating a sonic illusion of the stage being a cave, it was a beautiful project. A national newspaper honoured my work having "a huge impact" on the reception of the piece.

(it was not possible to record my work on this project in a way it is represented properly - so here's a picture of me preparing the close proximity microphones to record the blasting in a stone mine. Picture by Samuel Herger.)
